LYBREL is a birth control pill that delivers the same low dose of hormones every day. Unlike the older oral contraceptive pills which had higher number of hormones, Lybrel birth control pill comes in low-dose form with health benefits. So, women can take this birth control pill with much fewer health risks.
As like other birth control pills, Lybrel prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation. And its active ingredient Levonorgestrel stops the body's monthly release of an egg from the ovary and thickens cervical mucus which makes it harder for sperm to fertilize an egg. Plus, while taking LYBREL, the lining of your uterus does not undergo the changes needed for menstruation and, therefore, you do not have regular menstrual periods. This period suppressing drug comes in a 28 day-pill pack. The pills contain 90 micrograms of a progestin, levonorgestrel, and 20 micrograms of an estrogen, ethinyl estradiol. These active ingredients are similar to and work like other FDA approved contraceptives. Except, you skip the placebos. And LYBREL provides women with more hormonal exposure on a yearly basis (13 additional weeks of hormone intake per year) than conventional cyclic oral contraceptives containing the same strength of synthetic estrogens and similar strength of progestins.
Besides preventing pregnancies, Lybrel can also elicit an acne preventing effect. The ethinyl estradiol component of the pill can reduce circulating levels of testosterone and ultimately limit facial oil secretion- one of several factors implicated in provoking acne. But, you can experience possible side-effects of levonorgestrel that include oily skin and acne. If you do experience acne while using a contraceptive containing levonorgestrel, inform your doctor, because commonly prescribed acne antibiotics like tetracycline can make levonorgestrel less effective.
Furthermore, cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels from oral contraceptive use, especially if you are over 35. Women who use the Pill are strongly advised not to smoke. The most common side effects reported with LYBREL in a clinical trial are headache, menstrual cramps, upper respiratory infection, vaginal bleeding, and nausea. Some women should not use the Pill, including women who have blood clots; breast, uterine, or liver cancers; a history of heart attack, stroke, or breast cancer; as well as those who are or may be pregnant. The other important thing is that as regular monthly bleeding does not occur on Lybrel, thus it may be difficult to recognize if you get pregnant. If you suspect that you may be pregnant, or if you have symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea/vomiting or unusual breast tenderness, you should have a pregnancy test and you should contact your health care professional for necessary action.
